It's a double standard that is the result of the teacher's favoritism for students.The CQP assessment has been in use for many years as a measure of academic achievement and in actuality, it has never been designed to help the teachers manage classroom teaching assignments. The job of the teacher is to teach each lesson and to explain what those lessons entail to the students. The best way to do this is through written materials.The concept of the CQP is to see if the curriculum is being used in the classroom, and if it is, the written materials should be given extra attention. This is an examination for which the teacher is responsible and which should not be considered a 'set it and forget it' method of delivering instruction.The CQP questions pose two basic tests. My Experience At Williams College By Chloe Brown (The second part in the series of an insider's account of her college admissions process and college life) My time at Williams was exactly what I wanted it to be, even though it wasnt what I necessarily expected it to be. But thats a large part of what makes college so excitingits exactly the sort of place where youre supposed to surprise yourself, push your own limits, and be inspired by things you didnt even know about. When I came to Williams, I was certain I would be an English major, learn French, and continue singing classically as I had throughout high school. Everyone else changed their minds and majors, I had heard, but I would be different. I knew what I wanted. Now, here is what actually happened: two weeks before my freshman fall, I transferred on a whim from French to Arabic. I got into a sketch comedy group that conflicted with choir rehearsals, and ultimately picked the former. This lead to other acting projects, and eventually I began writing my own plays. I was in an a cappella group all four years, so I still got to keep singing. After a year and a half of Arabic, I got a grant to fund a project on gender roles in Sanaa, Yemen. The next year, I spent a semester in Alexandria, Egypt, and the following summer, I went to Middleburys summer language intensive. I wrote for the school paper and the literary journal, and was Editor in Chief of the academic journal. My senior year, I wrote an honors thesis entitled Graphic Violence: Representations of Terrorism in Contemporary American and Palestinian Cinema. The things that were important to me, like stories, languages, and the arts, were all a huge part of my college experience, but I ended up pursuing them in very different ways than I intended. I believe everyones college experience should be about being affected by whats around them. Its good to come in with a sense of what youre interested in, but allow the things and people that inspire you to take you off your set course. For me, Williams was the perfect place to do this. My professors were amazing and accessible, and were just as happy to meet me in the local coffee shop to discuss anything I was passionate about as they were to go over edits for a paper. Furthermore, I was surrounded by brilliant, interesting people my own age that inspired me and turned me onto things Id never heard of before. Since the school was so small and rural, it really created a sense of community. I honestly cant imagine having gone anywhere else.

Online Education A New York Times article has reported that SRI International for the Department of Education discovered that students performed better in online learning scenarios than in classroom scenarios. The study was performed from 1996 through 2008, and it used mostly college students and adults. However, some K-12 students were used. Students who did some or all of their work in online settings ranked nine percent higher on test scores than students who used strictly classroom, face-to-face instructions. On average, students who used online instructions ranked in the 59th percentile on test scores, while students who used only classroom instructions ranked in the 50th percentile. The report used 99 studies to compare students using online instructions to those using classroom instructions for the same course, according to The New York Times. Barbara Means, the studys lead author and educational psychologist at SRI International said that online education has evolved significantly. The studys main significance lies in demonstrating that online learning today is not just better than nothing - it actually tends to be better than conventional instruction, Means told The New York Times. Experts, however, told The New York Times that the classroom will not become obsolete. However, they noted that online education will increase significantly within the next few years, as its value enhances. Experts also told The New York Times that online education gives students a more unique learning experience, and the programs can be designed to fit the needs of the individual students. This is something that the classroom can at times lack. Experts also noted that the student is more active and more attentive in an online situation. Experts said that Web-based video, instant messaging and collaboration tools helped boost the value of online education and further engage the students. Philip Reiger, the dean of Arizona State Universitys online and extended campus program, told The New York Times that he believes online education will sharply grow within a few years and transform college campuses. Currently, many K-12 schools and colleges use online programs like Blackboard and Moodle. However, these schools do not use these programs to do full-scale teaching. These programs are mainly used for posting assignments, schedules, grades, class notes and other similar information, according to The New York Times. Reiger told The New York Times that he believes technology will rapidly evolve online learning programs in the next few years. The technology will be used to create learning communities among students in new ways, Regier says. People are correct when they say online education will take things out the classroom. But they are wrong, I think, when they assume it will make learning an independent, personal activity. Learning has to occur in a community. Nearly all colleges offer some form of online education. Most colleges even allow students to pursue online degrees. Online classes can allow a student pursuing a double major or a five plus year degree graduate ahead of schedule. Some students may not find it feasible to be away from home during the summer to take summer classes. However, online classes offer a second, feasible option. These students can engage and earn credits over the summer on their free time. Online programs could also give college graduates an option to easily pick up a higher degree, while working full time. These people could take online classes at night, at their own pace, to further enhance their knowledge and workforce value. Some argue that online classes benefit the student because he/she can learn the material on his/her own time. Also, students can listen to class lectures at their own pace. Students can also rewind lectures or listen to them multiple times. However, this is nothing more advanced than what a cheap tape recorder, sitting on ones desk can accomplish. Opponents argue that the classroom situation is a unique, intimate experience with a professor. They argue that this is something that online classes lack. Opponents also argue that students can not ask questions in online lectures and can at times be left stranded. Ultimately, some students may perform better than others in online scenarios. Also, online classes may work well for some classes but poorly for others. Students should weigh their options and seek advice from guidance counselors on the matter.

5 GMAT Mistakes You Must Avoid Youve studied long and hard for the GMAT. You know the test in and out. Youve scheduled a GMAT test date. So what could possibly trip you up on test day? Once youve prepared for the exam, most GMAT mistakes come down to timing. Lets examine five blunders to look out for before you take the GMAT. 1. Arriving late to the center The first step to avoiding GMAT mistakes is simply showing up on time. You should be at your GMAT testing center at least 30 minutes ahead of time. In fact, if you arrive more than 15 minutes after your scheduled exam time, you may not be admitted to take the test. Plan your travel route and visit the center beforehand to avoid any day-of transportation issues. Introduce yourself to the receptionist or center manager and let them know you will be taking your exam there. Identify the locations of the lockers and the restrooms. Bring water and snacks for the scheduled breaks. But most importantly, rest the day before so you have the energy necessary to get through the three-and-a-half-hour test. 2. Not taking the optional breaks You may wish to try and save time by working through your breaks, but this isnt always advisable; in fact, it is a common GMAT mistake. It will not necessarily help your performance because you run this risk of burning out before you reach the end of the exam. Take this time to relax, use the restroom, drink your water, and/or eat your snacks. Use your breaks as periods of reinvigoration to help you continue to perform your best on the following sections of the GMAT. 3. Solving questions solely in your head You dont get extra points for your thoughts, so make sure you use the noteboard provided to show your work when applicable. Organize your pages so that you can read your work and strategically eliminate incorrect answers. Even the simplest formulas can become stressful to work out mentally on test day. Jotting down notes, equations, keywords, and phrases can help you concentrate on the question at hand and lead you to the best answer choice. 4. Dwelling on previous or future questions The GMAT is a computer adaptive exam; you can only answer the question in front of you, and you cant continue until you provide an answer to that question. Therefore, you should focus solely on addressing the question currently on the screen. Dont worry about what came before or what will come next. Furthermore, dont try to determine the level of the question. This wont help you solve it. Instead, try to understand what this particular question is asking, select the best answer choice, and then move on to the next question. 5. Taking too long on any one question You should try to spend no more than a couple of minutes on each question. Use your time strategically. This means knowing your strengths and weaknesses on each section and on each question type. Not completing an entire section on time (i.e. leaving questions unanswered) will result in a penalty, so answering every question is a must. However, getting through a section too quickly is not necessarily advisable either. If you are flying through a portion of the exam but not answering all of the questions correctly, then slow down. Take the time to read each question carefully. There is no bonus for finishing the exam with extra minutes left over, so use all the time that you are given to reach your target GMAT score. To avoid these common GMAT mistakes, preparation is key. Take your GMAT practice tests in an environment that closely replicates the test centers environment on exam day, in the same time periodincluding the breaks. Jot down your thoughts as you move through the test. Focus on the question at hand and keep a steady pace in each section.
